With direct SATA connection to your computer, its possible to access each disk directly. Typically, enclosure manufacturers add RAID when you have two or more disks in a tower. Most power users need access to lots of disks, for different things. 'Work' stuff on one disk, Linux on another disk, video on another. Connecting external hard drives one at a time to your computer is both tedious and annoying - cables, power supplies, different labels and so on.
