The 4 bay HD-3401-ES is a small, stylish, and practical hard drive case which connects to the computer via a single eSATA cable. The multi bay drive has a 'port multiplier', which enables one Sata port to control up to 4 hard drives individually.
When hard drives are installed in the stylish HD-3401-ES, each disk drive can be seen, called JBOD. This is a great feature, enabling the individual control of 4 SATA hard drives in one box (one power supply, one SATA cable). It is so much cleaner than having 4 hard drives each with their own power supply and 4 SATA cables, to achieve the same result.
In order to use the HD-3401, your computers eSATA port must have a port multiplier connector. Identify your motherboard, and search on 'port multiplier' to see if it is suitable. Otherwise, you can purchase a PCI card with eSATA that supports port multiplying. Most current motherboards will have this support, but please check to make sure, otherwise, you will only be able to 'see' one of the 4 hard drives in the hard drive case.
On the HD-3401, each hard drive is mounted in a removable caddy. This makes it extremely convenient to add and remove have drives. You can also buy a single disk and add more disks as you need the extra disks space.

HD-3401-ES applies Silicon Image-Sil3726, which is a SATA Port Multiplier, translates the communication protocol between SATA II 3.0G commands. The Hi-Speed SATA controller supports one-to-five native SATA Port Multiplier. Also, Sil3726 supports for FIS-based switching and command-based switching SATA host controllers, makes your HDDs work very smoothly.
