Removeable 2.5" USB and Sata Drive
The HD-RE-251 is a novel concept in external data storage. It enables you to connect a 2.5” Hard drive in an enclosure directly to your computers SATA interface. The enclosure can be removed from the housing, and then it turns into an external USB2.0 mobile hard drive.
The unit comprises two components; the 2.5” USB2.0/SATA enclosure, and the housing. The housing is installed into a 3.5” or 5.25" drive bay on a desktop or tower computer. The enclosure can then be inserted and removed from the housing with ease. The enclosure can be connected to any computer via the USB2.0 port.
The advantage of doing things this way is speed. A direct SATA connection is much faster than going via USB. So while you are at your computer, you can backup, store, edit your data very quickly via the direct SATA connection. When you are out and about, or if you want to transfer data from your main computer to another, then you can use the mobile drive as you would a standard USB2.0 based hard disk.
SATA is around 2-4 times as fast as USB2.0 when related to hard disks. A mobile hard drive connecting via USB2.0 will achieve around 10-25Mb/second*. Connecting via SATA will at least double, and even quadruple the data transfer rate, depending on your computer.
*The USB2.0 specification is 480Mbps, which is really meaningless. In the real world, portable hard drives connecting to a fast computer via USB2.0 will rarely achieve over 25Mb/second.
