Mobile Hard Drives
External portable drives or mobile drives are pocket sized hard drives which are suitable for data storage and backup. The main advantage of a mobile drive is their size and the fact that they don't require mains power. This effectively enables anyone to carry up to 160GB in their shirt pocket.
Mobile storage Devices
Having masses of data on tap in a tiny package creates a range of possibilities. Why carry your laptop around with you when you can simply store all your work on a mobile device. When you get to where you're going, you can plug the portable hard drive into a computer and carry on with your work. Think music library or photo album, the uses are endless.
Portable Drive Connections
Mobile drives are supplied with a choice of connections, enabling them to work with any Windows based computer of Apple Mac. A selection of USB2.0, FireWire and eSATA mobile units are available, with capacities ranging from 40 to 160GB. Due to the slower spindle speed of the mobile drives, the data transfer rate is not as fast as a desktop drive. However, their petite size and mobility more than make up for the lower performance levels.
