USB Hubs
USB Hubs provide an instant solution to the ever increasing need for USB ports on a computer. If you have a computer with 1, 2 or 4 USB ports, it won't be long before you need a hub. These useful items come in a range of shapes and sizes. If you are using a laptop computer, it may be worth obtaining one of the small, unpowered USB hubs which are available. These wont take up much space in your computer bag while travelling, yet still pack in 4 USB2.0 ports for your peripherals.
Mains Powered Hubs
If you have a desktop computer, you can use either a mains powered hub, or an unpowered hub. A powered hub is always preferable. If you have USB peripherals that draw power, an unpowered hub will not be able to supply sufficient 'bus' power to run more than one device.
Additional USB Ports
If your computer has a USB port and not a USB2.0 port, adding a USB2.0 hub will not 'upgrade' or increase the speed of the original port. A USB2.0 hub will continue to work on a standard USB port, albeit at USB1 speeds.
In case you were wondering about just how many USB ports you can have in total, the answer is 127. Now that's a lot of hubs!
