The USB Floppy disk, also called the USB diskette drive, is an external 3.5” USB Floppy Disk drive reader/writer. The external Floppy Drive has become an important accessory with new computers. It connects to the computer via the USB port and it does not require any mains power.
Computers, both Windows and Mac based, are not shipped with internal floppy drives any more, so, if you still have data on a floppy disk the easiest way of accessing the diskette is via an external USB Floppy drive. Plugging the floppy drive in is very quick and easy and works with all modern computers.
The drive supports both Apple Macs and PCs, plugging into the USB port and has a data transfer rate of around 500KB/second. Its stylish looks will match most modern computers. It is lightweight and slim to carry around on the go.
The USB Floppy Drive reads 3.5” floppy disks with capacities 1.44MB only. 720Kb floppy disk and old format 5.25” floppy disks are not supported.
The floppy drive supports any computer with a USB port. So it works on Apple Mac computers, with OS8.6, 9.1 and OS 10.2 and above. On Windows computers, it supports Windows 98SE, Windows Me and 2000, windows XP and Windows Vista. Windows 7 is also supported. The floppy drive will also work on Linux based computers with USB Ports.
PLEASE NOTE: ON THE PACKAGING OF THE FLOPPY DISK DRIVE, NEITHER WINDOWS VISTA NOR WINDOWS 7 IS MENTIONED. HOWEVER, VISTA & WINDOWS 7 IS SUPPORTED. WE SAY AGAIN, VISTA WINDOWS 7 IS SUPPORTED.
What makes USB Floppy Drives still so popular? Well, for years now computers and laptops have been supplied without a floppy drive attached. In fact, Apple announced in 1998 that the floppy drive is dead. So, for all those people without a floppy disk drive in their computer, the only way to get access to their floppy disk drives would be to get either an internal floppy drive, or much easier, add an external floppy disk. And the best way of adding a floppy disk to a computer is via the USB port. A USB Floppy drive is so easy to attach to a computer. It needs no power supply, and plugging the USB Floppy drive into the computer via the USB port takes just seconds. Its a real no-brainer!
We have two types of USB Floppy Drives for sale. We don't believe that when you buy a floppy disk you should spend a lot of money. If you look at the USB Floppy Drives on the market, you will see that the prices range from very cheap to around £50! We'll, we have been selling floppy disks for around 6 years and the the prices have not moved that much. So we believe that for a good quality USB Floppy drive, you should pay no more than £16-£20. Its not like if you pay more you will get a better quality unit. Our USB Floppy disk is very good quality, and works well. Floppy disk drives are also FDD.
Please make sure that you have a spare USB port to which you can connect the USB floppy drive. Running the floppy drive from a Hub is generally not a good idea because the floppy drive needs bus power. Unless your USB hub is powered, then the power drain from a USB hub, combined with the power required from the usb floppy drive, would be too much for a standard USB port.
