External Data Storage

It may be useful to know that facts and figures 'hide' many aspects of external data storage. For example, what does the data transfer rate for a USB2.0 hard drive (quoted as 480Mbps, which is 57.2 MB/second) mean when you can only achieve 20MB/second? Why is this? And why is FireWire, which quotes 400Mbps, faster at data transfer than USB2.0? And did you know that not all of the stated capacity of a hard drive is usable!
