2.5" Mobile USB2.0 IDE Enclosure

The External Mobile Enclosure is an aluminium case with a USB2.0 interface which enables you to create your own portable external hard drive solution. Creating your own external hard drive is very easy and is a great way of making use of existing (spare) hard drives. It is also less expensive than buying an already built external hard drive. 

Installation in minutes

Installation, even for non-technical people, is straightforward. The hard disk enclosure is supplied with a USB lead/cable, fitting screws, even the screwdriver, installation manual, driver CD for Windows 98SE, and a carry pouch.

USB2.0 connection for PC or Mac

Once you have assembled your disk drive into the USB2.0 hard drive enclosure, it operates as an ordinary external disk drive. You can store and backup data to it, and you can also use it between computers.  Works with Windows from Windows 98SE onwards, including Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7. Mac OS, including  OS9.x and 10.x and above. Linux, and any other operating system that has USB Mass storage support.

Technical Stuff

The external hard drive enclosure works on computers with USB1.1 and USB2.0 interfaces. If you are using a new hard drive, you need to format the hard drive before you can use it. The Mobile Enclosure fits into your shirt pocket, measuring only 1.9cm high, 8.3cm wide and 13.8cm long. Weight without a hard drive is a mere 100g's.  

This hard drive caddy will accept only 9mm high hard disk drives (not the older 12.5mm disks). Hard drive caddys which support 12.5mm hard drives are not easily found (we're still looking!).

Before you buy your hard drive enclosure, please check the following:
Is your hard drive a SATA hard drive, or IDE? IDE is also referred to as ATA or PATA. You can find this out by enterning the part number of your hard drive into a search engine. Look at the specifications of the hard drive before purchasing the 2.5" hard drive caddy.

The next thing you need to check is the physical size. Again, in the technical specifications, it will tell you if the drive is a 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive. We refer to 2.5" hard drives as 'Mobile' and the 3.5" hard drives as 'Desktop', hence a mobile 2.5" hard drive caddy or desktop 3.5" hard drive caddy.
